Whether you are going to New York or not you should read this before you go on your trip to the USA and make some notes.

Renting a car

You must bring the license from your country along with an international license to rent a car.

You must also have a credit card.

Sales Taxes

Value-added tax (VAT) and Sales Taxes are very similar but in the case of Sales Taxes, you will not receive a refund as you would being a citizen of a foreign country.

Sales tax is usually not included in the price tags and differs from state to state.

The sales tax is 8.625%, the hotel tax is 13.25% plus $2 per room per night, and the parking garage tax is a whopping 18.25%!  If you are from Europe, then you will probably laugh at this being that sales taxes range from 19 to 25%.

Tipping and Gratuities

Unlike Europe tips are not included in charges in the USA, except for some posh restaurants.  Tips should be given based on the service that you receive, that is the logic to receiving good service.  Generally, tips range from 10% to 20%.

What you can bring with you

Many visitors want to take items that they like such as wine, cigarettes, or gifts for friends and relatives.
