VARIOUS S/W TOOLS - text based

If you happen to like working manually rather than in gui mode then I think that you may find working with linux much easier using one of the following programs.

mc midnight commander (like Norton commander)
  for an editor, use the default in midnight commander, works great
pine email prog on linux
patch upgrading utility
mtools dos commands under linux
minicom text comms prog
info info on progs, utils, functions
joe & vi wordstar style editors, use ctrl-k-h for help
