LINUX RESOURCE #3
LINUX SOFTWARE VERSIONS: (tried and tested on the noted hardware)
Use Custom install to get the best results. Generally all necessary s/w is available distro cd's.
I have tested the above versions on the hardware detailed on the previous page and have had only some minor problems with the
x-system (gui) that required manual intervention into the config files.
The distributions that would not work on this hardware was RH8 and RH9 above as it appears that RedHat is going
the Redmond route to follow M$ ways of making money.
During my latest testing of Mandrake 10.1 Official, I noticed that after performing an upgrade of the 9.1 system that a few problems occurred.
Although I am not sure, a few of the problems may have occurred because I decided to add both English and Greek
to the system. This may have resulted in 10.1 not being able to properly upgrade the x-windows files correctly.
Another problem occurring after this was that the screen was not displaying Midnight Commander properly.
This may have happened as the system font defaulted to utf-8.
Each of the distributions have their own tricks and tips to create a working linux system and that is because each was designed for
different users. A major difference in the distributions is that of installing additional 3rd party programs.
Simply put, programs are available in either rpm or debian formats however some of the distributions also provide conversion
installers that can handle either format that you might encounter from say the free cd's or dvd's included with linux magazines.
The distributions shown below are only a sampling of what is available either through the internet or magazines or retail packages.
This is the summary of seven (7) distributions using the hardware noted.

I have not discussed the why's some of the distros did not work as this would require much more analysis and documentation than it's worth.
